Rosie has been dating Simon for two years. Two years of lectures and essays and skipped lunches. Late nights, shared pillows, films half watched.

Two years of him not knowing about Josh.

It is a Sunday when she tells him. They are lying in bed together, and it is his rest day, which means he is not out on the water, for once. His arms are around her, holding her to his chest. Hairless, and smooth, like the hull of a boat.

She’d had a bad dream. Woken up and thought, momentarily, that Josh was still alive, and Simon asks her what’s wrong, and so she tells him everything.

Or at least, the everything she can bear to tell.

That she had a twin brother. That she loved him like she hasn’t ever loved anybody, and that he died, one night, just before she came here. Dead before he made it to the hospital. Dead as soon as his skull smashed on the rocks, so far back from the tide.

She talks like it is all she is able to do. No emotion and no pause; a river, pouring out of her, until it isn’t.

Simon lets her run dry, and then he says my God Rosie that’s terrible, and he just holds her, and asks no questions, and it is then that she thinks she might marry him.
